A Shot at Immortality

McKinney, TX — It was a sun-drenched Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch, and Scottie Scheffler was on a tear. After carding rounds of 61, 63, 66, and 63, he stood at 31-under par, tying the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record with a total of 253 strokes.

Scheffler started Sunday at 23-under.  In FOUR rounds, could he surpass the legendary, albeit mythical, 38-under par in a SINGLE round reportedly achieved by North Korea's late leader Kim Jong Il?  The most sacred, unverified, and dubious golf record of all time?

Legend has it that Kim, in his first-ever round of golf, shot a 38-under 34, including 11 holes-in-one. A feat so extraordinary, it was immediately followed by his retirement from the sport.

All it would take would be 16 birdies on each of the remaining 18 holes.  Or just 8 eagles.

But by the time the sun set in Texas, all Scheffler could manage was a paltry 8-under as he eked out an 8-shot tournament win over Erik van Rooyen and fell one stroke shy of the lowest round in PGA Tour history.

Post-round, Scheffler reflectively addressed the missed opportunity.

“I gave it everything I had. But 38-under? That’s sacred ground. That’s like hitting a grand slam in chess.”
