Midnight Madness
Not everyone is excited about the Yankees-Dodgers World Series.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights and USC Trojans played one of the latest-starting games in recent college football history, with kickoff at 11:00 PM EST on October 25. This unusual timing came as a result of an experimental scheduling decision that aligned the game directly after the World Series.
College football fans across the country struggled to stay awake, as the unusual start time proved to be too late for many viewers. Scheduled as a nightcap to baseball’s biggest stage, the late kickoff led to a marathon evening of sports, with fans on the east coast fighting sleep as the game stretched into the early morning.
Fox Sports made the decision begin the game after the World Series in an effort to maximize TV viewership. However, by the time the final whistle blew at nearly 3:30 AM, it seemed like more fans were asleep than awake. Social media lit up with posts about fans falling asleep in front of their TVs, remote in hand, as the game played on. One fan tweeted, “Was excited for USC-Rutgers, but it turned into a bedtime story!”
